Ben Gong Mui
August 19, 1948 – July 10, 2026

With hearts full of gratitude for a life well lived and confidence in the promises of our Lord Jesus Christ, we celebrate the life of Ben Gong Mui, a faithful husband, devoted father and grandfather, follower of Christ, and trusted friend. Ben entered Heaven on Friday, July 10, 2026 by the pure and redeeming grace of God and His confession of faith in Jesus Christ.

Ben was born on August 19, 1948, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and was raised in Skokie, Illinois. From an early age, he learned the value of diligence, integrity, and compassion. He graduated from Evanston Township High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Ben dedicated his entire professional career to Walgreens. At the age of 18, he began as a stock boy, working his way through college and, after graduation, served as a pharmacist at Walgreens Pharmacy in Deerfield and Lake Forest for many years. He used his degree as an opportunity to serve others. 

Ben met the love of his life, Helen Abayang, through relatives. He travelled to the Philippines to ask Helen's father for his permission to marry her. The couple were baptized together shortly before they married on August 14, 1978, at the Chinese Christian Union Church in Chicago's Chinatown. Together, they built a family defined by unconditional love, hard work, and devotion. 

Ben was a faithful follower of Christ. He was a member of Christ Church Lake Forest and studied God’s word. His quiet example of faith, humility, generosity, and caring love left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Ben took pleasure in the simple things in life. He enjoyed sitting in Panera Bread reading the newspaper, walking through the Chicago Botanic Gardens, watching Star Trek and the Big Bang Theory, looking for deals while grocery shopping, and most importantly spending time with his family. Ben was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an adoring grandfather who delighted in every opportunity to gather with those he loved. He was generous with his time and energy, and whether celebrating milestones or enjoying ordinary moments together, Ben treasured time with his family. 

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, You Mow Mui and Choy Lung Chin, and by his siblings, Yuk Oi Poy, Bing Mui, and Susan Woods.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 47 years, Helen Mui; his siblings, Bon, Bond, and John; his daughter, Christine(Brad) Scott of Lake Forest; his daughter, Stephanie(Klaus) Weber of Evanston; and his son, Michael(Sijie) Mui of Hamilton Township, Ohio. He was the proud and loving grandfather of Cian, Lukas, Theodor, Matthias, Addison, and Declan. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who rejoice in the privilege of having known him.

Though our hearts grieve his absence, we do not grieve without hope. Because Ben placed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, we rest in the assurance of God's promise that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8). God and His followers are victorious over death.  “O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?" 1 Corinthians 15:55-58.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Seguin & Symonds Funeral Home, 858 Sheridan Road, Highwood, Illinois 60040.

A celebration of Ben's life will be held on Friday, July 24, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Church Lake Forest, 100 North Waukegan Road (Routes 43 & 60), Lake Forest, Illinois 60045. Burial will follow at Willow Lawn Memorial Park in Vernon Hills, Illinois.
