Bonnie Lu Petrow, née Covelli, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on February 28, 2026 at the age of 82. Born to Louis and Theresa (Frigo) Covelli on October 15, 1943, she was raised in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago and was a proud graduate of St. Willibrord Catholic School. Defying her chaperone on a girls trip to Miami Beach in 1963, she and her friends snuck out to a beach bar at the end of the strip where she met Jerry Petrow, who coincidentally lived a handful of blocks away from her back in Chicago. Although she walked away from him that evening, he pursued, and on February 8, 1964 they were married and soon started their life journey together, raising their family in the Chicago Ridge and Tinley Park communities. Bonnie and Jerry had just celebrated their 62nd Anniversary. Cherished mother to Vicki (Frank) Pasquesi, Jerry (Diane) Petrow and Keri (John) Maas, she guided her children to be independent and thoughtful. Fond and loving grandmother of Micaela, Jessica, Kaeli, Gianna, Claire, Jack, Jake, Luke, Ava, Cecilia, Elyse and Nicholas, her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Bonnie was preceded in death by her brother, Louis Covelli. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr, 17500 S. 84th Avenue, Tinley Park, IL. Rev. Matthew A. Nemchausky will preside over mass at 11:00 a.m. Private interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum committed to the appreciation and understanding of the beauty and science and ecological value of mollusks and their ecosystems. Bonnie always enjoyed shelling on the beaches of Sanibel, Florida and would rejoice every time she found a “fig,” her favorite shell. https://shellmuseum.org
