Donald Lyons Obituary

Donald Edwin Lyons, age 91 of Lake Forest passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at his home. He was born  September 15, 1932 in Metcalf, Illinois one of seven children born to the union of Lester and Ruth (Vale) Lyons. He served in the U.S. Army in the Signal Corps attaining the rank of Corporal. Donald was educated at Purdue University, holding a Bachelor's and Master's degrees, was also a member of the President's Council of Purdue University and a loyal Purdue Boilermaker fan. Donald retired as a Vice-President at Snap-On Tools. He participated in the Chicago Marathon, Chicago Triathlon and Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (Ragbrai), River to River Trail, He backpacked across Ireland and hiked the Appalachian Trail. He was an assistant Scoutmaster who was awarded the Order of the Arrow. Don was a master gardener designing a garden railway. He volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate working on behalf of children in the foster case system and the Veteran's Administration Hospital. He was a published writer, specializing in childhood memories and was part of a writing group. He was listed in the Who's Who in the Midwest. Above all else, his proudest achievement was his role as husband, father and grandfather.

Beloved husband of 69 years to Ruth Jane nee: Graham loving father of Stephanie Lyons (Paul),  Stephen Lyons and the late Jacqueline Michelle Lyons on February 2, 2024. Fond grandfather of Cassidy Lyons.

A private family service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. in the Fort Sheridan National Cemetery, Sheridan & Vattner Roads, Highwood. A celebration of Life gathering will take place at a later date.
