Funeral services for John N. Bently, age 91, of Highwood, will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 29, at Zion Lutheran Church, 10 Deerfield Road, Deerfield. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Seguin & Symonds Funeral Home, 858 Sheridan Road, Highwood. John passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024 in Highwood, after an extended illness.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois on December 21, 1932 to the union of John F. and Christine (Merz) Bently. He graduated from Purdue University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in speech. He also served in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. In December of 1954 he married Gladys Rechel, also of Oak Park.
He married Gloria Linari of Highwood in September of 1971. John and Gloria were opera performers, appearing in venues across the United States and Europe in careers which spanned more than 20 years.
John was president of Bently Carefree Pools and Spas, located in Highland Park; he led the business for 54 years.
He served as an alderman for the city of Highwood for more than a decade.
He is survived by three children and one step-child: Jean (Eric Weigel) Bently-Jones of Tomah, Wisc.; Joan (Daniel) Fletcher of Grayslake; John (Debra) Bently of New Richland, Minn., stepdaughter Marikay (Tom) Vander Ven of Athens, Ohio; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by Gloria Linari Bently, his wife of 43 years; his adult daughter, Ruth Bently; and his sister Ellen, of Huntsville, Ala.
