Our gentle, kind and loving mother, Katherine "Kathy" “Cass” Coleman, 81, passed away on July 10, 2023 at Augustana Regent Assisted Living in Burnsville, Minnesota. Kathy lived her life dedicated to her Catholic faith and her family, often putting others' needs before her own. She was an incredibly loved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother throughout her lifetime, which she lived with a soft-spoken and enduring strength. Kathy bravely fought a long battle with cancer for seven years, which included a courageous contribution to medical research in the area of immunotherapy and the development of new cancer treatments. Kathy was born January 31, 1942 in Chicago, IL, and was the middle child of three children born to the union of Raymond and Frances Carlson. She and our Dad, William (Bill), raised their family of five children in Deerfield, IL, whom she cherished with her whole heart. She later moved to Grayslake, IL. Kathy grew up in Glencoe, IL. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart High School in Lake Forest, and then studied at Mundelein College in Chicago, IL, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education. Kathy furthered her education by earning a Master’s Degree in education and literacy at Northeastern Illinois University and went on to teach elementary school in Waukegan, IL and at Holy Cross Catholic School in Deerfield. Kathy spent over 30 years teaching PreK, 1st grade and Resource and was loved and adored by her students, proving to be a wonderful teacher, colleague and friend. She retired from teaching and remained in Grayslake, IL until 2021, when she relocated to live near her oldest daughter in Minnesota. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 50 years, William Coleman, and her sister, Myra (Geoffrey) Williams. Kathy is survived by her 5 children: Michelle (Michael) Callero of Apple Valley, MN, Michael Coleman of Denver, CO, Teri (Ethan) Danstrom of McKinney, TX, Beth Coleman of New Orleans, LA, and Tim (Courtney) Coleman of Golden, CO, her beloved 8 grandchildren: Ethan Jr (20), Ella (18), Thomas (17), Marissa (16), Gabi (14), Max (11), Natalia (10), and Grant (9), her brother, Raymond (Cathy) Carlson of Fox Lake, IL, 4 nephews and many cousins.
Visitation will be held 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the Symonds Lakes Funeral Home 111 W. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL60030. Funeral mass will be 11:00 AM Friday, July 21, 2023, 10:00 AM visitation at at Saint Gilbert Catholic Church 301 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030. Interment at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Northbrook, IL. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society in our Mom’s honor.
