Mary Josephine (Gallagher) Cooney

Mary Josephine Cooney nee; Gallagher, of Antioch, and formally of Grayslake, IL passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Mary Jo was born in Bunnacurry, Achill Island County Mayo, Ireland, and was the only daughter of five children born to the union of Patrick and Catherine Gallagher. Mary Jo immigrated to Chicago in 1961, and met James Joseph Cooney her loving husband of 42 years at an Irish dance. Following their wedding, they moved to Grayslake, IL in 1971 where they built their home and raised their five children.

Mary was a homemaker and lived to take care of her five children and thirteen grandchildren. At Mary’s home, there was never a half-filled glass or empty stomach. She enjoyed cooking, pontoon boating on the Chain of Lakes, Chicago Cubs, sitting by the fireplace and listening to the Irish music play and socially entertaining family and friends with all things Irish.

Mary is survived by her children; Catherine (Christopher) Millar, Patrick Cooney, Doreen (Don) Bunt, Coleen (Matthew) Checkon, and Jimmy Cooney, her grandchildren; Adam (Ali) Millar, Aubrey (Carlos) Cortez, Alec Millar, Erika Cooney, Liam Cooney, Tara Cooney, Caitlin Bunt, Colleen Bunt, Eileen Bunt, Bridget Bunt, Donny Bunt, Seamus Checkon, and Giuliana Checkon, her brothers; John Francis (Betty) Gallagher, Anthony (the late Ann) Gallagher, Patrick (the late Margaret) Gallagher, and Vincent (Kathleen) Gallagher, preceded in death by her husband James Joseph Cooney and her parents Patrick and Catherine Gallagher.

Visitation for family and friends will be at 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the Saint Gilbert Catholic Church 301 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Karl Langsdorf, officiating.  Interment to follow at the All Saints Cemetery, in Des Plaines, IL.
