It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nicola "Nick" DiGiovanni, aged 91, on January 15, 2025. Born on October 14, 1933, in Palermo, Italy, Nick’s remarkable journey took him from the shores of Sicily to the heart of America, where he built a life full of hard work, love, and generosity.
Nick enlisted in the Italian Air Force, where he served proudly for six years. In 1957, his parents immigrated to the United States, and Nick remained in Italy for another two and a half years to fulfill his commitment and wait for his younger brother to turn 21, so they could reunite. On November 8, 1960, at the age of 27, Nick arrived in the United States with little English but a steadfast determination to succeed.
Nick worked tirelessly to adapt to his new life. He enrolled in night classes at Austin High School, earning a certificate of completion for his dedication to learning the language and culture of his new home. His determination led him to a long career in the garment industry, where he became a valued member of Oxxford Clothing, one of the world’s most famous tailor shops. Nick’s expertise in tailoring and his leadership skills earned him a supervisory position, where he oversaw 44 employees in the cutting room for more than 25 years until his retirement in 1998.
After retiring, Nick continued to work in various fields, including the restaurant business with his uncle and floral design with his brother. He became known for his stunning flower arrangements, creating beautiful setups for weddings, funerals, and special events. Nick continued his floral work even after the passing of his brother, honoring his family’s legacy and his own love for craftsmanship.
Nick was the 5th of eight children and leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his children: Monika Torres (Las Vegas), Mario (Mary) DiGiovanni (Columbus, TX), and Christina (Stephen) Banks (Chicago), as well as his grandchildren: David Whitacre, Kassi Whitacre, Michael Torres, Victoria DiGiovanni, Joseph DiGiovanni, Damon Midkiff, Kyla DiGiovanni, Nico DiGiovanni, and Sabrina Banks, along with seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph and Mario (Carol), and is also survived by his sister Anna Marie Bonelli (Robert) of Grayslake, many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Nick was known for his big heart, always helping others behind the scenes without seeking recognition. His caring nature and willingness to lend a hand made a lasting impact on everyone he met. He had a deep passion for soccer, often sharing his love for the game with his family and friends, and a remarkable green thumb, growing everything from tomatoes to zucchini in his garden.
Nick’s legacy is one of love, perseverance, and kindness. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.
A memorial service to honor Nick’s life will be held at St. Joan of Ark on Thursday January 23rd, Visitation 9am, Mass to follow at 10am. Reverend Keneth Anderson, Celebrant entombment will follow at all Saints Catholic Cemetery Des Plains.
