Walter M. Moyer, 89, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025, at the Village at Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst, Illinois, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Jean L. (Fegely) Moyer, with whom he celebrated more than 60 years of marriage.
Walt was born on October 23, 1935, to Walter H. and Ethel M. (Leister) Moyer in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Hatfield Joint High School in 1953 and completed additional business courses at Peirce Junior College in Philadelphia.
Walt was employed by the Harleysville Insurance Companies in Harleysville, Pennsylvania, for 51 years, retiring in 2004 as the premium audit manager. In 1958, while working at Harleysville Insurance, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served for three years and spent part of his time stationed in South Korea after the Korean War. Following his Army service, he returned to Harleysville Insurance and continued working at the home office for more than 40 years. In 1984, he was named auditor of the year by the Philadelphia Insurance Auditors Society.
Walt was devoted to his family and enjoyed summer camping trips, watching the Phillies, traveling, and volunteering for church and community activities. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, then later Little Zion Lutheran Church in Telford, Pennsylvania, closer to home. He served on church committees and the board of the Lutheran Community of Telford.
In retirement, Walt became passionate about choral singing, joining the choir at Little Zion and the North Pennsmen Barbershop Chorus. He and Jean enjoyed traveling with friends to the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Conventions.
In 2009, Walt and Jean moved to Lindenhurst, Illinois, to be close to their two grandchildren. They enthusiastically attended band concerts, soccer games, and swim meets, and hosted numerous sleepovers. Walt continued his passion for singing by joining the choir at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Libertyville, the Vocaleers at the Village at Victory Lakes, and the Arlingtones A Cappella Chorus. He especially enjoyed performing with the Arlingtones at community events and treasured the friends he made in these groups.
Walt is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters Patricia (Steve Oelschlager) of Grayslake, Illinois, and Deborah of Wauconda, Illinois; grandchildren Hannah and Andrew Oelschlager; his sister Ethel (the late Frank) Fisher; brother-in-law Robert (Susan) Fegely, an aunt and uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Beverly Cluck.
